Expectations are like fine pottery...
Expectations. Paradox of control. Make stuff and share it.
Hey friends.
If you’re reading this, just know that I love you. For real, appreciate you.
Okay, here are your 3 insights in 3 minutes.
🫖 Expectations
“Expectations were like fine pottery. The harder you held them, the more likely they were to crack.”
😬 Paradox of Control
The paradox of control is that the more you try to control, the more you lose control.
Managers micromanage the team.
Athletes choke under pressure.
Parents helicopter their kids.
So instead, focus on what is within your control (expectations and actions).
A classic example is tossing in bed “trying” to fall asleep, which is a silly concept (falling asleep is passive, not active). The more you try to fall asleep, the harder it becomes.
But shifting expectations from “I need to fall asleep now” to “I’m here to relax and rest will come” removes the pressure.
The key is to create conditions where the outcome eventually CAN happen without demanding that it immediately MUST.
Last month I spent 5 days in Dublin at the SaaStock conference in Dublin.
I wrote a breakdown with takeaways here.
But since being back, I’ve had a bigger takeaway…
MAKE STUFF AND SHARE IT.
The following week, people messaged me on LinkedIn thanking me for the Notion swipe file template (here it is) and how helpful the roundtable was.
Or another example from a few days ago.
Mike, my current most streamed artist, replied and reposted this thread I made back in April.
You never know who you’ll meet or the opportunities you’ll attract.
But the best approach is similar to shifting expectations from MUST to CAN.
A bad way to approach content is:
“I must go viral this week and meet new customers or cool people.”
A better approach is:
“I am going to share what I learn so it can eventually reach interesting people and increase my surface area of serendipity. But either way, I’ll learn a bunch.”
Make stuff. Make connections. ✌️

Mitchell
