🌱 My #1 priority for the month

The additive bias and my priority for the month (read: ~2 min 15 sec)

Here’s your 3 insights in under 3 minutes.

🤔 Mistake of More

Overwatering kills more plants than underwatering.

Obesity now harms more people than hunger.

Sit with that.

We’re wired to add. Hit a problem and our brains immediately think “what can I add to make this better?”

That’s the additive bias. Fixing things by adding more rather than taking away.

In one study, people were asked to steady a wobbly Lego tower and almost everyone added blocks. Pretty much no one removed blocks.

Once you see it, you’ll notice it's everywhere:

  • The most active traders have the worst returns

  • Widening a highway makes traffic worse, not better (induced demand)

  • Offer people 24 jams instead of 6 and they buy far less

For a century we taught kids to ride by adding training wheels. Then someone removed the pedals instead (the balance bike), and kids started learning faster than ever.

📌 Top Priority

For 500 years the word “priorities” didn’t exist.

It was singular until the 1900s when we kept adding things…

“The word priority came into the English language in the 1400s. It was singular. It meant the very first or prior thing. It stayed singular for the next five hundred years. Only in the 1900s did we pluralize the term and start talking about priorities.”

⚒️ Priority Plan

We’ve all heard “less is more” and “keep it simple, stupid.”

But what does that look like?

Try this.

Write down everything you want to do. Anything goes, all of it. Any project, cool idea, someday idea, things you think you “should” be doing, whatever.

Then pick ONE. Your single priority for the month. (The word was singular for a reason.)

Then everything else goes under the “not now” list.

Here’s mine.

Take a few minutes to write yours now.

But don’t stop there. The next step is CRITICAL.

Share it with at least one person. That keeps you on the hook. (see how I shared mine above?)

I’m happy to be that person for you. Hit reply and let me know!

Remember, you can do anything, but not everything (at once).

Todo bien,
Mitchell
